Sierra Leone, 3rd Jul 2023 – Malema Village, a small community situated in Soro Gbema Chiefdom, Pujehun District, Sierra Leone, is in dire need of assistance to address its pressing health and sanitation challenges. With a population of 42,292 (20,291 Men & 22,001 Women), according to Statistics Sierra Leone, the village and its surrounding areas have been grappling with inadequate sanitation facilities, leading to severe health issues among its residents.
In the absence of proper toilets, the village faces an unhealthy environment, contaminated by human waste. This contamination poses a significant risk to the community, as waste from infected individuals can pollute the land and water sources, facilitating the spread of infections and diseases. The absence of adequate sanitation facilities leaves the villagers with no choice but to live and drink water from heavily polluted sources, further jeopardizing their health and well-being.
Recognizing the urgent need to address this critical issue, initiatives were launched to construct toilets in Malema village. However, due to insufficient funds, the construction had to be halted, leaving the community in an unfinished state.
