Bridgewater, New Jersey – This December, the residents and staff at the Avalon Assisted Living at Bridgewater are busy making the holidays brighter for neighbors in need within the local communities. “We have a lot to be thankful for,” said Frances Burrell, Director of Activities. “And, in keeping with our mission to care for people like family, our hope is that we can bring a little ease, comfort and joy to those less fortunate.”

Burrell is spearheading the “Christmas Giving Tree” program, focused on collecting items to help mothers and babies in need. Together with the Pregnancy Aid Center of Raritan, New Jersey, they will help as many mothers as possible by donating necessities for the care of their children. The wish list includes baby diapers (size 5), baby wipes, baby diaper cream, baby shampoo, baby lotion, baby footed rompers (size 0-3 months and 3-6 months).

In addition, the folks at Avalon Bridgewater will be assisting the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP). Located in Somerville, New Jersey, SHIP is a non-profit, interfaith and community funded organization that works to meet the needs of those who suffer from homelessness, hunger, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, or isolation in the Somerset County regions.

“On December 22, we will be cooking “Ziti for the Needy,” one of SHIP’s programs, and will deliver the casseroles to SHIP so that they can serve the food we made on their food truck that drives to local parking lots and gives free meals to anyone who is hungry,” said Burrell. “To fulfill another need, we have asked our Avalon community to bring in hats, gloves, and socks so that we can give them to SHIP to distribute with our casseroles.”
