‘Starting A Digital Marketing Agency From The Beginning With No Experience Is Difficult But Not Impossible.’, Says Seth VanDaele To Budding Agency Owners.
With a high and growing demand for digital marketing services – The number of businesses moving their operations online is increasing day by day. There is a long way to go from nothing to having an established digital marketing business with many clients and staff. Nothing stopping you from making it a reality and entering the exciting world of digital marketing as a service provider.
Seth VanDaele, a Canadian Digital Marketer & Agency Owner and Entrepreneur, started his venture ‘Cormier Media’ during the pandemic, and the transition from being an employee to a full-time business owner created a lot of challenges but also gave him equal opportunities. He shares, ‘In the journey of being an entrepreneur, I have made a lot of mistakes but I’ve also learned some valuable lessons that helped me improve my processes and offerings to having a healthy and successful online marketing business.’ Seth shares 2 eye-opening insights about starting a digital marketing agency.
# Key 1- Develop The Necessary Skills
If you have grandiose visions of becoming a success right after you accept your education, chances are you’re going to fail miserably. You can be the smartest person in the room, but if you’re not prepared and experienced enough to deal with the finances and client relationships, you’ll be looking for another gig real quick. It may take years for some to build the skills necessary, it may take less for others. Regardless, you need to actually hold down a real job for some time before you venture out on your own, just like Seth VanDaele had a job at a construction site and a sales job at a car dealer shop before Cormier Media.
Everything from how the organization is structured to its culture, product, and leadership plays a part in how your day to day (and career) unfolds. Before you go ahead and master your digital marketing skills, you may need to experience what it’s like to work with clients. This will inevitably make you a more understanding and well-rounded professional.
#Key 2 – Be A Contractor Before Becoming A Founder
Though it seems like a lot of risks, it is actually developing the foundation for a business before making the decision to do it full time. Seth suggests, ‘Do some contracting work on the side for a period while holding down a full-time job for a variety of reasons. It allows you to strike out on your own without assuming much risk. You get a taste of the entrepreneurial life when you begin to do side work.’
You’ll have to get used to the process of putting a proposal together, then a contract, and then sign the NDAs. It’s a part of the game that you’ll want to streamline as soon as you plan to start a venture so that the time spent on getting new clients is reduced. Having to negotiate the cost of your services is another skill that many overlook early on. Building the skill of ascertaining how much you should charge for a specific project or service will become extremely valuable down the line.
