Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills Inc. Offers Day Programs for Adults with Disabilities in Ottawa

Kanata, ON – Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills Inc. has been open since 1985 and focuses on supporting adults with developmental disabilities. The non-profit organization and its team offer encouragement, opportunities, and new experiences through various programs designed for learning, growth, and socialization. They have grown to serve more than 200 individuals through a broad spectrum of programs, including day programs.

The organization has structured its programs to be inclusive and offer the best chances to individuals, helping them grow and achieve their purpose. The day program offered incorporates an array of activities with opportunity for breaks and movement to encourage overall wellbeing.

Describing the leisure program offered, the Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills Inc. spokesperson noted that their leisure program is dedicated to “providing a more relaxed environment.” He added that the program is designed to cater to participants who enjoy games, music, art, cooking and socializing with peers, all in a low demand and relaxed setting.

Participants can also partake in the social connection program designed for those looking to expand their social circle and engage in a multitude of activities in a day. The program is divided into two sects; skills building and skills maintenance, and incorporates most of the leisure program activities as well as others including culinary skills, life skills, tech, communication building and exercise, etc.

People living with developmental disabilities can also access the Next Steps program, designed around the traditional classroom experience to build academic and socialization skills, health and wellbeing, communication, safety, and home skills.

Some of the important activities included in this program include hiking, bowling, swimming, gym, and seasonal activities like snow shoeing.

Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills Inc. is open to all adults with developmental disabilities in Ottawa, irrespective of what theirs may be. They especially welcome people with developmental disabilities like Down Syndrome, dual diagnosis, FASD, Asperger syndrome, and Autism. They also work with people with developmental disability and common disorders like personality disorder, bipolar disorder, seizure, psychotic disorder, reactive detachment, anxiety, oppositional defiance disorder, panic attacks, etc. Ottawa residents with family members or loved ones who are blind, deaf, or non-verbal and diagnosed with developmental disability are also welcome to enrol their loved ones in the range of programs offered.
