As a staunch environmentalist, Yashas Shashidhara, a senior at Dublin High School spends his time advocating for environmental policy at his city’s majors council and leading his school’s underwater sustainable robotics team. As the founder of Envirology, a student-led organization to expand environmental education, he authored the audiobook: Climate Modeling and High Performance Computing. Envirology is focused on helping students foster a deeper understanding of environmental complexities, promoting sustainable practices, and inspiring the next generation of environmentalists through initiatives, workshops, and educational outreach. Now with tens of thousands of listens on his audiobook and hundreds of students who have participated in his environmental literacy program, Yashas continues to spread his passion for environmental technology education.
When asked about his motivation for delving into such a specialized field, Yashas reflects: “ My family originated from an agricultural background, so the environment was always an important part of our livelihood. This book is a culmination of my passion and a desire to bridge the gap between climate science and the technological advancements that can shape our understanding of it”.
Students from over 15 countries and all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds have completed the curriculum offered by Envirology and later joined the project incubator program, hoping to make a change in their communities. As part of the curriculum, the book covers the basics of climate modeling by discussing topics such as the history of climate algorithms, artificial intelligence, simulation techniques, and their implications on decision-making. The key to the curriculum offered at Envirology is their hands-on approach. Envirology aims to inspire students to start their own initiatives in their hometowns, thereby spreading the importance of planning for a sustainable future.
